Planning Solutions Ltd, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2015, now manages several Visitor Attractions, on long lease terms, on behalf of third party organisations. These include: Conkers and The National Brewery Centre in the East Midlands, Supertubing in South Wales and Kent Life in Kent. Planning Solutions also owns a number of leisure businesses including Harry Ramsden’s Restaurant in Brighton, The Royal Esplanade Hotel and the Bembridge craft bakery on The Isle of Wight and Onboard TV - an advertising service on Wightlink ferries.
Management of Visitor Attractions
PSL specialises in the operational management of visitor attractions generally under long term contract arrangements, for third party clients that include private companies, charitable institutions and public authorities.
These include the Conkers Discovery Centre (on behalf of The National Forest Charitable Trust), The National Brewery Centre (on behalf of Molson Coors), Supertubing (on behalf of the Ebbw Vale Festival Retail Park) and Kent Life (on behalf of Maidstone Borough Council). PSL works closely with each of these organisations to achieve agreed targets for the delivery of a quality visitor experience and the maximisation of significant income streams.
PSL has made sizeable investments in each of these attractions and ‘takes on the risk’ for the delivery of agreed annual income targets.

Leisure Catering and Retail
Through its experience of managing visitor attractions PSL has developed considerable expertise in these key areas of ‘secondary spend’ income. Maximising the revenue from these avenues can often make the difference between success and failure for an attraction. Across the Visitor Attractions it manages, PSL operates a range of restaurants, cafes, kiosks and vending outlets. Conkers and the National Brewery Centre are serviced by full on-site catering facilities that cover the requirements of general visitors as well as wedding and corporate clients. Both Conkers and The National Brewery Centre also operate themed retail areas and gift shops.
PSL’s knowledge of leisure catering is also enhanced through its ownership of Harry Ramsden’s Restaurant in Brighton, the Bembridge Bakery and the newly acquired ‘’Royal Esplanade Hotel’’- both situated on the Isle of Wight.
PSL’s Leisure catering and Retail management experience has been an important factor in giving clients the confidence to award the company new management contracts or consultancy projects.
PSL has considerable experience of the Tourism accommodation sector.
In Mike Stickland’s earlier career he held the position of M.D. of Rank Holidays and Hotels Development Division where his team identified the market opportunity to develop the highly successful Warner Holidays brand and evaluated the original sites for development. Mike was also heavily involved in property acquisition for Shearings Holidays and Haven Holiday Parks.
Clive Johnson was Head of Marketing for The Butlins Holiday Worlds and Hotels Group for five years in the 1990’s.
In recent years Planning Solutions has utilised this experience to advise clients such as Forest Holidays on brand development and site acquisition and to assist The Rempstone Estate in Dorset to get planning permission for a Luxury Holiday Lodge development. PSL has latterly managed the Lodge build programme and advised the Estate on the marketing and operational management of the development.
In October 2015 PSL acquired the 72 bedroom “Royal Esplanade Hotel” in Ryde on the Isle of Wight, from Shearings Hotels division. After an extensive refurbishment programme PSL will market and operate this historic listed hotel itself, offering business travellers and tourists and excellent accommodation base in the heart of Ryde, with restaurant facilities and new function and conference spaces.
Operational adherence to Compliance Regulations
The understanding of and adherence to statutory Compliance Regulations is a vitally important requirement for any leisure business.
Given PSL’s wide involvement in the management of attractions, tourist accommodation and catering outlets – the company has had to become well versed in ensuring safe and compliant operational delivery against all the relevant Health and Safety legislation including COSSH, Fire and and general risk assessment and environmental, health and safe food production procedures.
